The Working Man – Labor Day 2025

The hardest working dog in the world, Sammy of Everybody Loves Sammy on Facebook.

Sammy understood the working man because he was a working man.

The year was 2012, Sammy and I were in New York City building the “Everybody Loves Sammy” and “Dr. Harp Seal online communities on Facebook (page links below). We were just a couple of kids giving it everything we had. I was 43 years old at the time and Sammy was 8 years old.

Despite being an internet celebrity, Sammy was a man of the people. He did know he was famous, and for me he was just the love of my life. He was my little Budski, my main name for him in our private life.

From morning until night, our days were full of hard work. We writing, doing photo shoots, and running all over the city, chatting with everyone we met. Sammy was a people magnet. Crowds followed us wherever we went. The only reason DriveWithCompassion(dot)com exists is because of the “Everybody Loves Sammy” online community on Facebook. While I will never compare anyone to Muhammad Ali, I can tell you this: Sammy also shook up the world.

For whatever reason, on the morning of Thursday, January 30th, 2020, he just decided to never wake up again. He was gone like the wind. He had been completely fine the day before. I had plans for our future together, and for life had other plans and took him out of the picture.

While DriveWithCompassion.com now covers many topics about humanity, it all started on the 54th floor in the sky on 38th Street and 1st Avenue in New York City. My current wolfpack and I will always know that it was Sammy who made everything possible.

On this Labor Day weekend, I remember the hardest working dog in the world who also happened to be the love of my life, Sammy, my little Budski

Some beings are so lit up on the inside that they shine on the outside. Sammy was like that.

GunMerica Strikes Again – Minneapolis Catholic School

Picture by the New York Post

Thoughts and prayers do not work. God is not even proven. However, what is proven is that guns take lives and destroy families and communities. In fact, I think ‘thoughts and prayers’ make gun violence worse by fostering complacency and preventing action.

Just yesterday, on August 27, 2025, a shooter identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman walked into a Catholic school carrying three different guns. He opened fire, killing two children and injuring seventeen others, including fourteen children and three elderly parishioners. Before we get started, one has to ask: what was a 23-year-old doing with three guns? And he purchased them all legally.

This shooting in Minneapolis comes just a month after the mass shooting in New York City, showing once again how relentless and devastating gun violence has become in America.. Governance has to start caring more about protecting citizens than protecting dangerous guns.

Even if there were no bad guys, no mentally ill people, and no terrorists, there are still way too many guns in circulation. And there are way too many types of guns that should never have been in circulation in the first place.

The gunman left a manifesto, apologizing to his parents, siblings, and friends for letting them down and not turning out the way everyone had hoped. He wrote that he could not take the pain anymore and felt that life was not worth living. Apparently, Robert was a transgender woman and legally changed his name to Robin in 2017.

His parents were supportive of the name change and of his gender identity. Yet Westman remained a troubled person, with mental health issues dating back to 2018. One might ask why he did not just take his own life? Did he need to destroy families and an entire community? No, he did not. But mental illness alone does not explain what happened.

Here is the point: there will always be mentally ill people in society, and that is not unique to the United States. We must address the GUNS.

The United States has an addiction to guns the world has never seen before. And like with any addiction, until it’s acknowledged and treated, it will continue to wreak havoc on anyone and everyone. The US is 4% of the world’s population and yet owns 40% of the world’s guns. That math is insane on it’s face. Guns are everywhere, and people have easy access to them.

Is it any wonder the US has over 40,000 gun deaths a year? Japan has only 10 deaths a year. Yes, just 10.. Even one death is too many, we know that. But 40,000 gun deaths? Some might say, “But the US is twice the size of Japan.” That’s true, but with that logic, the US would have around 20 gun deaths a year, not over 40,000.. The United States continues to put “Profits before Lives.” It’s supposed to be the other way around.

People should Not have to live like this. – There is a better way. – Stay with me.

Westman purchased all three guns legally and had no criminal record. This is a perfect example of why we need to crack down on guns and ban many types of firearms from being sold in the first place.

There is a Solution:

The United States needs to approach guns the way it does with cars and the Department of Motor Vehicles.. If someone wants to use a gun, they should get a license. If someone wants to own one, it should be registered. If someone wants to operate one, they should be required to carry gun insurance. Just like we do with cars. We should also follow Japan’s example, where strict gun safety laws have virtually eliminated gun violence. Japan makes it difficult to own a gun, not easy. Finally, we need to ban assault rifles and other military style weapons. This is how the United States can dramatically reduce gun violence, if not eradicate it altogether.

LOOK at how JAPAN MASTERFULLY handles gun violence below:

“If people want to own a gun, they must attend an all-day class, pass a written test, and achieve at least 95% accuracy during a shooting-range test. Then they have to pass a mental-health evaluation, which takes place at a hospital, and pass a background check, in which the government digs into their criminal record and interviews friends and family. They can only buy shotguns and air rifles — no handguns — and every three years they must retake the class and initial exam.”

Lastly, the Second Amendment should be removed from the Constitution. It gives guns an unfettered protection and reverence they should not have. Guns should not be revered. They should be frowned upon. The Second Amendment is a major contributor to the mass shooting epidemic, constantly shielding this gun violence under the ‘right to bear arms’ argument. When will the United states put lives before rights and profits?

Sincerely,

Scott Smith

The Scorpion and the Tortoise – Donald Trump

The Scorpion and the Tortoise

One day, a scorpion stood at the edge of a river and asked a tortoise for a ride to the other side.

The tortoise hesitated and said,

“You’re a scorpion. If I let you on my back, you’ll sting me.”

The scorpion replied,

“Don’t be ridiculous. If I sting you, we’ll both drown. Why would I do that?”

The tortoise thought about it. It made sense.

So he agreed and let the scorpion climb on his back.

They slowly began to cross the river.

Halfway across, the scorpion stung the tortoise.

As the venom spread, and the tortoise began to sink, he gasped,

“Why? Now we’ll both die!”

The scorpion calmly replied,

“I couldn’t help it. It’s in my nature.”

Donald Trump has cheated and defrauded people his entire life. That started well before The Apprentice, long before his presidencies, and it continues through today.

Why? – Because it’s in his nature.

ICE ICE Baby – The Gestapo is Here

Dear Brown People,

The Trump Crime Organization has exploded the ICE budget to over 40 billion dollars a year, which is more than the FBI, the US Bureau of Prisons, and the DEA combined.

If you are a brown person, here legally or illegally, I would strongly suggest carrying all of your identification at all times and setting up an immediate support system. Maybe start filing motions to have your hearings over Zoom as an example so you are not kidnapped into a van by masked men at the courthouse.

ICE is the Gestapo of the twenty first century. This is the rise of Nazism. It is not pending anymore. It is here. Trump just deployed several hundred marines to Florida to help ICE get those brown people. Apparently, yesterday, they got their first one. He is a teenager.

I do not respect the American flag as of July 4, 2025.. The Trump Crime Organization just fleeced the needy and handed it to the greedy to the tune of one trillion dollars.

The Americans who fought and died for our freedom did not do so for lifetime charlatan, Donald Trump, to hunt down brown people, set up concentration camps in El Salvador and at Alligator Alcatraz, sell meme coins, citizenship cards, Trump Bibles, gold sneakers, cryptocurrencies, and now Trump fragrances. What a joke.

They did not fight and die so Trump could initiate illegal and unconstitutional tariffs. They did not fight and die so he could illegally and unconstitutionally deport immigrants without due process.

But back to brown people now, it’s not all bad news. If you have $5 million laying around, you can become a citizen tomorrow morning.

Fourth of July? Nope. This is the hangover from being pillaged by greedy white men.

Welcome to the United States of Crush the poor, weak, disabled, minorities, women and seniors.

Sincerely,

Scott Smith, a Non self-hating white man

How do you feel about the Flag now?

I will not pledge allegiance to this flag anymore. Not until all people enjoy its so called “freedoms.”

To me, the United States flag is just some fabric with red, white, and blue colors on it. It does not mean anything more than that. I will never stand for the flag again. Not on the Fourth of July or any other national holiday. More on that at the bottom of this article.

Between Medicaid cuts and cuts to the Affordable Care Act, Trump’s big beautiful scam will throw 17 million people off healthcare, and about 2 million people will lose their SNAP food benefits. Hospitals and nursing homes are going to close. Those facilities count on Medicaid. People are going to die. Additionally, many people are going to go hungry now because of SNAP cuts.

But the good news is, they raised the budget for the military (which could already blow the world up 100 times over), and they gave MASSIVE PERMANENT tax breaks to the super rich. Oh, and Trump launched his new fragrance line in the past few days as well. So that should help the marginalized too.

Fiscal responsibility? Lol.

The good ole United States of crush the poor, weak, disabled, women, seniors, and minorities.

To all my friends out here who can see this bill for the humanitarian crisis that it truly is, I want to show you who the Republicans actually are.

There are THREE categories to the current Republican base:

1. MAGA lunatics (cultivated)

2. Uneducated and dumb people. Meaning: they will vote against their own interests and feel like they are taking one for the team (red states). You know, the “God, Country and Guns” lunacy. If Trump asked them to jump into a pool with no water, they would jump in head first.

3. Extremely selfish people. – This is actually the biggest component of the Republican Party. Meaning, if it is good for their families, they do not give a _uck about your family.

As mentioned above, I will never stand for the flag of United States again. I will be taking a knee for brown people who are being hunted down like the Jews in Nazi Germany. I will be taking a knee for all the marginalized people in the United States, no matter their race, creed, religion, or background, including Jewish people who are once again being targeted.

COLIN KAEPERNICK is my hero. Well, Muhammad Ali is first of course. But, Kaepernick second.

I fully reject white supremacy and this fight for white power to reign supreme again. The world has globalized and is turning brown. Deal with it.

Sincerely,

Scott Smith, a Non self-hating white man.

Criticizing Israel Does Not Mean People are Antisemitic

Gaza is gone.

You can be critical of Israel and not be antisemitic. There are some Jewish people who cannot see that.

If someone’s mind cannot understand that people can criticize Israel and not be antisemitic, it means they believe all Palestinians are terrorists. And that is factually wrong. To a large degree, this explains why there is such a dislocation between the newly elected Democratic nominee for NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani and the horrible things being said about him because he is Muslim.

Many Jewish people voted for Zohran Mamdani. Many people of all backgrounds voted for Mamdani. If you do not like Muslims, that’s your business. But be honest about it. Because stepping aside from religion and backgrounds, this young man has a plan to tackle NYC’s biggest problem, ‘affordability.’

The same way many countries despise the US now because of Donald Trump, it does not mean they dislike the American people. No, they despise Trump, who is now doing infomercials to hock his new fragrance line while Rome is burning.

That is how many people feel about Israel’s government right now. I’m not talking about the people of Israel. I’m talking about the right wing government. Over 150 countries, representing the vast majority of Earth’s population, oppose what Israel is doing to Palestinians, either through official UN votes, public condemnation, recognition of Palestinian statehood, or legal action.

CNN’s Jordan correspondent, Clarissa Ward on Gaza.

Even families of the hostages are imploring Israel’s leadership, saying please do not make this just a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, but include Gaza as well. Journalists in the Middle East are saying Iran is not even the main story, despite all the headlines. The Middle East and much of the world are in uproar over what is still happening in Gaza. Kids are eating sand just to fill their stomachs. Stephen Colbert recently interviewed CNN’s Jordan correspondent, Clarissa Ward. “We are approaching a man made famine. We have crossed the Rubicon here,” Ward said.

People and countries all over the world are saying that Israel does not have the right to kill tens of thousands of innocent people who had nothing to do with what happened on October 7, 2023. But they did it anyway. They also did not have the right to displace 1.9 million people from their homes. But they did that anyway. And they did it again yesterday, bombing a beach cafe where Gazans were simply trying to get some online connectivity to the outside world. Another 30 innocent people were scorched and killed. Has anyone looked at the pictures of Gaza? There is no Gaza anymore.

October 7, 2023 was Israel’s 9/11. No question about it. But that does not give any country the right to slaughter innocent people and displace 1.9 million people from their homes. The same way 9/11 did not give the US the right to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens during its 12 year war. More accurately said, 12 year slaughter.

I no longer feel that Israel is an ally of the United States. I believe the far-right extremist government of Israel is a terrorist state. I am 100 percent against the genocide and atrocities it has inflicted and continues to inflict on the innocent, defenseless people of Gaza. While I do not support the government, I stand with the Israeli citizens who are in uproar over what their government is doing and the war crimes it is committing.

The government of Israel is on the wrong side of history here. The world will never forgive them. It didn’t have to be this way.

Sincerely,

Scott Smith

The United States of Guns, War and Overpriced HealthCare

Picture by John Hopkins School of Public Health

When a country has an $800 billion annual defense budget, what do you think will happen? It’s pretty logical. That country will tend to go to war more than others. The U.S. defense budget exceeds the combined military spending of the next ten highest-spending countries.

When a country is 4% of the world’s population but owns 40% of the world’s guns, what do you think will happen? Exactly. More gun deaths than any other country on earth.

When a country’s healthcare and prescription drug prices are 10 to 30 times higher than in other countries, what do you think happens? More deaths related to healthcare costs and it will be the number one reason why Americans file for bankruptcy.

The same is to say, if you left a whole bunch of kids alone with a box of matches, there is a good chance there would be a fire.

Any questions?

The Hero We Needed – Dennis Brown

Happy Father’s day to my real father, Dennis Brown.. My biological father died in 1984 when I was 14 years old. I did not know much about him and never felt connected to him. A few months after his death, my family and I met Dennis Brown. He was in charge of the moving company we had hired to move us to a different house.

We became very close to Dennis during that process. He stepped into my life as a father figure when I needed one most. He and I remained close until I was 27 years old. He was the father I was meant to have. Life gave me a gift when Dennis came into our lives.

My biological father and I had nothing in common. He loved watching sports, going skiing, and believed sleepaway camp was the greatest thing ever for kids. I disliked all three of those activities. As a result, I never really enjoyed my time with him. Today, even if he were still alive, I don’t think we could even go for a beer together. What would we talk about?

Dennis taught me about humanity and how to be a good man. He was a beam of light. Whenever people were around him, they lit up like a Christmas tree. He was endlessly positive and always had a big smile on his face. Some beings are so lit up on the inside that their shine on their exterior. Dennis Brown was like that.

Sadly, he died of cancer on October 5, 2015.. I was in Puerto Rico at the time. I spoke to him on the phone the day before he died. He told me he was getting better every day. He stayed positive until his very last breath.

I do not believe in God or Heaven at all. But if I am wrong, I would ask that God send me wherever Dennis Brown is.

If they ever tell my story, let them say I walked with giants. Let them say I lived in the time of Dennis Brown.

We Love Who We Love — It’s Hip to be Square

Pride flag. LGBTQ flag. Rainbow flag. Fluttering in the wind

It was hip to be square for decades and decades back in the Village of New York City, long before LGBTQ was even a well known acronym.

And it still is.

That is why I chose to go to New York University. I have always been a free spirit and more of a citizen of the world than just an American. Meaning, I can get along with anyone from anywhere, no matter who they are or what they are.

Love is love. I mean, I love my animals more than my human family. And my human family understands that. And for that reason, I love my human family.

DriveWithCompassion(dot)com and the Everybody Loves Sammy online communities proudly support the LGBTQ community.

Sincerely,
Scott Smith

Who is Dr. Harp Seal?

So, the question arises once again. Who is Dr. Harp Seal?

You can listen to the audio message of this post, or just read below:

From the time Sammy was a puppy, he had an amazing ability to make people happy. People from all walks of life, and in all kinds of moods, took to him. He reminded me of a doctor because doctors make people feel better.

Secondly, I have always felt a tremendous amount of compassion for harp seals. Well, any seals for that matter, and the annual hunts they endure in Canada. I will not get into detail here.

Lastly, Sammy looks like a harp seal, as we have all seen. So in 2012, I created the Dr Harp Seal character out of that combination of thoughts, and he has been a keeper ever since. Nothing feels better or more real than creating something out of the experiences of one’s own life. Dr Harp Seal came to life just that way.

Let me leave you with this. Dr Harp Seal represents animal kindness across all species. His mantra is “Animal equality is a tireless journey. There will be no retreat.” Have a great day. Thank you for stopping by, friends.
